- In Vitro - Structures of Zeylenol and Zeylena, Constituents of Uvaria zeylanica (Annonaceae) - College of Pharmacy, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona - 1981: During the course of our investigation of the methanol extract of the roots of Uvaria zeylanica L. (annonaceae) for tumor inhibitory constituents, two new crystalline compounds, zeylenol (la) and zeylena (3a), were encountered (see Chart I). Although both were found inactive in the P-388 lymphocytic leukemia test system, their isolation, characterizati on, and biogenetic relationship to other Uuaria constituents are described herein.

- In Vitro - Brine Shrimp: A Convenient General Bioassay for Active Plant Constituents - Purdue, McLaughlin - 1982: A method, utilizing brine shrimp (Artemia salina LEACH), is proposed as a simple bioassay for natural product research. The procedure determines LC50 values in g/ml of active compounds and extracts in the brine medium. Activities of a broad range of known active compounds are manifested as toxicity to the shrimp. Screening results with seed extracts of 41 species of Euphorbiaceae were compared with 9KB and 9PS cytotoxicities . The method is rapid, reliable, inexpensive, and convenient as an in-house general bioassay tool.
