From the beginning it was fairly clear that economies would pick up once governments and central banks began flooding markets with money. Provided the financial system can be kept intact, ...

How many more civilian men, women, and children will be killed by Israel before the U.S. government tells them to stop. I believe in self-defense, and it is stupid for Hamas (or any other group) to attack Israel with ''homemade'' weapons, but this collective punishment is wrong.

- Boston Review ? Dean Baker: Free Market Myth: In general, political debates over regulation have been wrongly cast as disputes over the extent of regulation, with conservatives assumed to prefer less regulation, while liberals prefer more. In fact conservatives do not necessarily desire less regulation, nor do liberals necessarily desire more. Conservatives support regulatory structures that cause income to flow upward, while liberals support regulatory structures that promote equality. ?Less? regulation does not imply greater inequality, nor is the reverse true.

- Mr. Rajan Was Unpopular (But Prescient) at Greenspan Party - WSJ: "Incentiv es were horribly skewed in the financial sector, with workers reaping rich rewards for making money, but being only lightly penalized for losses, Mr. Rajan argued. That encouraged financial firms to invest in complex products with potentially big payoffs, which could on occasion fail spectacularly. He pointed to "credit-d efault swaps," which act as insurance against bond defaults. He said insurers & others were generating big returns selling these swaps with the appearance of taking on little risk, even though the pain could be immense if defaults actually occurred. Mr. Rajan also argued that because banks were holding a portion of the credit securities they created on their books, if those securities ran into trouble, the banking system itself would be at risk. Banks would lose confidence in one another, he said: "The interbank market could freeze up, & one could well have a full-blown financial crisis." Two years later, that's essentially what happened." ;

- You Can't Govern if You Don't Believe in Government: Talk show cons and TV talking head cons and political cons - both Republican and DLC Democratic - repeat the mantra of "smaller government,&qu ot; and Americans nod their heads in agreement, not realizing the hidden agenda at work. Reagan was the first American president to actually preach that his own job was a bad thing. He once said, "Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first." One can only assume he was speaking of himself and his fellow Republicans, and certainly the current Congress' s devotion to the interests of inherited wealth and large corporations displays how badly his philosophy has corrupted a role so noble it drew idealists like Jefferson, Lincoln, and the two Roosevelts. But cons can't imagine anybody wanting to devote their lives to the service of their nation. The highest calling in their minds is to make profit.
